my favorite snack food combo: salty + sweet

Ever since I was younger, I have loved getting two things at the movie theater: popcorn and something sweet. Usually it was Junior Mints, because that's what my dad loves. My favorite thing to do is eat a handful of popcorn and then a Junior Mint. Sometimes I'd put both in my mouth at the same time. Classy, I know. And no, I never put the Junior Mints in the bag of popcorn. That is blasphemy. You could waste chocolate that way by letting it melt to the sides of the bag.

But lately when I go to the movie theater I have been mixing it up and getting popcorn and Reese's Pieces. Chocolate and peanut butter with popcorn? I'm down. It's salty and sweet, my favorite combo. Like dipping french fries in milkshakes. Mmmmm.

So last night when I was at the grocery store and saw this:

I knew I had to try it. I was leery at first because I don't like kettlecorn as much as just salty, buttery popcorn. But luckily the popcorn was regular salty style and the chocolate and peanut butter drizzled on it? Heaven. It was the best sweet and salty combo I have had in a long time. Now let me just say that I love popcorn. I mean, loooooove popcorn. I hate sharing it. When I go to the movies I like going with just B (or by myself) because then the popcorn is mostly mine. B likes popcorn, but he has self control. I have none. So last night I opened the bag and ate half of it. And then put it away because whoa. And then a half hour later I got it back out and ate the rest of it. Yes, I ate that entire bag in a two hour period.

I texted my friend Cinnamon* later:

Me: I bought a bag of popcorn that had chocolate and peanut butter and it was so delicious I ate the whole thing. Like...I bought it and ate it within a 2 hr window.

Cinnamon: You eat slow hahahaha

Me: Hahahah I put it away....and then got it back out.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is what friends are for.

So go buy this popcorn. It's so good. I should have bought more since it was on sale. On second though, it's probably better that I didn't.....

*No, that is not her real name, obvs.

  1. Oh my gosh, that sounds good.

I love kettle corn, and at the movies here they always have 3 kinds of popcorn: regular salty, sweet, and then one other that's wildcard, like it might be hotdogs or cheese or tom yung goong flavored. Anyway, we (obviously) never eat the wildcard one, but I used to always get the salty and sweet one mixed, gosh I loved that. Because I couldn't eat a whole container of sweet popcorn, I mean I could and I would eat it all, but I would start hating it as I was eating it, and not be able to stop. But the mix is so good that I would enjoy every piece.

    1. Yum! That is a good idea to mix, I would have to do the same thing. And the cheese wildcard sounds good! But maybe not the hotdogs one... :)

  2. Also your thing about having no self control.... one of the most mortifying things I have ever experienced is that once in 9th grade I went over to my kind-of-boyfriend's house (he was in 12th grade and was way cooler than me, so I don't know... I can't really claim that he was my actual boyfriend) and anyway he made this HUGE bowl of popcorn and we were watching a movie with his brother and his brother's girlfriend and I don't know, I was just sitting there by the bowl munching away.. and then all of a sudden he was like, "What the heck?! I didn't even get any!?" I had eaten the whole bowl, like a reflex. I didnt even remember doing it, but nobody else had any. I wanted the floor to open up and swallow me whole.

The thing is, now, with my husband, I'd be like, well... don't be so slow next time. No shame. But this was different, I was trying to be cool! I still remember how embarrassed I was.

    1. Hahahhahah oh my god!! I would totally do the same thing-eat it and all then be super embarrassed!! I have no shame now with B, he knows better :) Sometimes I warn him that it's about to be gone, but other times he sticks his hand in, gets crumbs and just looks at me and I shrug. I can't help it when it comes to popcorn!!

  3. Omg, I love salty and sweet, too! There's a popcorn flavor called Chicago Mix that's just cheese popcorn and caramel corn mixed up in a bag together. I guess you can just buy 1 bag of each and mix it up -- yum heaven!

    1. Oh my god! In Kansas City (where I was born) there is this popcorn place called Topsy's that is the best.ever. They have these huge containers with three flavors (or just one flavor-boring) and we always get cheese, cinnamon and caramel. But I always end up devouring the cinnamon and cheese because I'll eat cinnamon and be like "man that's spicy, I better have some cheese. But I don't want to end on cheese, so I better have some more cinnamon." Repeat. Until the entire container is empty.

    1. What?!?!?! Xae!! How can you refuse to try it?!

I mean, I get not being into french fries and milkshakes. But what about old fashioned trail mix? Peanuts and raisins and M&M's? Come on, you have to try it!! It's the best combo ever!

  6. I am totally making sure Ashley sees this because she is a sweet and salty girl. She puts peanut M&Ms in her popcorn for watching movies. This is right up her alley!

    1. Yum! I love peanut M&Ms! That's a good idea!

I realized last night that it will be even better when I make a batch of regular popcorn to mix this popcorn in with-then I will get a little more salty to go with the sweet.

  9. I can't believe I never thought of Reese's Pieces in popcorn. You're going to be responsible for my Weight Watcher's membership. Love the new background btw.

  10. Speaking of this sweet/salty thing, I just opened up an old bag of peppermint/ white chocolate pretzels that were left over from Christmas. I was desperate and feeling daring. well fucking shock and awe, I can't stop eating them now. Every day, I open them up right when I get home from work and don't stop until I'm feeling nauseous and lethargic. You're right. It is a good combo.
