that awesome time i met my cake master idol

When I was living in Vancouver for 6 months I was unemployed. I had gotten laid off from work and while B and I figured out what to do (I looked for work up in Canada, but lots of places won't sponsor you for citizenship) I basically went to yoga, ran, cooked things, and watched Ace of Cakes. I love that Ace of Cakes show and seriously considered quitting being an engineer to go back to school to be a cake decorator. I would dream of working at Charm City Cakes and to be in on all their inside jokes. And I also maayyyyybe have a mini-celebrity crush on Duff.

The other day, I went to the gym with my friend who is a workout machine. She kicks my ass with her workouts, which is awesome and also leaves me hurting for days on end. Anyway, while she was on the leg press and I was standing there looking awesome, this guy across from her on some arm machine thing caught my eye. I stared at him for probably five minutes before I realized-it was Duff! I asked my friend if she knew who it was because I was pretty sure it was him, but not positive. So of course I asked.

Me: sorry to be rude, but are you from that cake show?

Duff: yeah, I am

Me: oh my god I love that show, I'm sorry for staring but I wasn't sure if it was you and I couldn't remember your name and....and....

Duff: nice to meet you, I'm Duff

Me: hi, I'm Tara

And then I turned 8 shades of red and almost died. Because not only had I just met my total cake making/decorating idol, but I was at the gym and I was sweaty and gross.

But he was super nice and I am totally going to stalk him, just kidding (not kidding). I even tweeted him when I got home. I'm so classy you guys.

Thinking of going back to cake school,
tara

  3. Ooh...I haven't met any famous people!! Robert Redford gave my dad a ride once when he was hitch-hiking. (I have to tell this story any time I get in this conversation. It's the only thing I can add.)

  4. Oh my god, I used to be obsessed with Ace of Cakes, particularly Geoff. I was seriously going to quit my job, get a van, drive to Baltimore, and be all, "Yeah I dropped out of art school, I'm cool enough to work here." Didn't happen. What was Duff doing in LA? I don't have Food Network anymore, did he open a branch there?

    1. Right? I totally wanted to do the same thing, except I knew I wasn't cool enough to work there. He opened this awesome store called CakeMix where you get to go in and decorate cakes!! Also I think they are opening a Charm City West or something. But you can bet your ass I am going to go decorate a cake! How fun is that?!

    2. Oh, I should probably clarify that I know these things because I stalked him when I got home. I didn't ask. I was too nervous.

    1. I LOVE his laugh. I think that's where the majority of the celebrity crush comes from-he just has such a great laugh. I haven't been to the shop yet because I just learned he had one, but I definitely want to go! It sounds so fun! They also offer decorating classes and I want to take one.

I would love to take cake decorating classes and learn how to make badass cakes. But I also just love the idea of being able to bake something from scratch without having to look at a recipe.

    2. You have to go to a decorating class and then share your wisdom with us. I tried to decorate Christmas cookies and it was a kindergarten sprinkle explosion. I need help.

    3. I will definitely share my wisdom!

I know, every time I decorate cupcakes they look awful. In my head they look perfect of course.

  6. That sounds awesome and a bit awkward at the same time. Don't you love meeting an amazing celebrity you love!
I always want to be all calm, cool, and composed when I meet a celebrity but then when I do, I kinda grow a shell and go into it. My favorite celeb meeting was with Ashton Kutcher :D

    1. It was kind of awkward. I totally feel the same-I want to be cool and calm, but then I get really nervous and just start talking and make an ass out of myself.

Oooh fun, you will have to tell that story!

    2. LOL, maybe. I've met several others too. Want a list ;)
